WHAM! (I kicked/tripped over Bean's little wooden footstool on my way back to bed.)
M: "Ow!"
A: "You okay little Mama?"
M: (Groan.) Yeah.
Al gets up and moves the footstool back where it belongs.
M: "Obama won."
A: "How do you know?"
M: "I just went down and checked." (You'll note I didn't mention the real reason I was on the computer, which was to fix the comments on my last post.)
A: "Oh."
(Silence.)
M: "I'm happy for our kids."
A: "Why?"
M: "They'll never know a time when someone with their skin color can't be or hasn't been President."
A: "Yeah, they're like mini-Obamas."
(Silence.)
A: "Well, you led the way, honey."
M: "I did?"
A: "Yeah. You let a black man in your white house years ago."
(Sleepy laughter.)

That Al - He is always so funny! I think it's great that our country has reached a point where they will vote a black man into the presidency, but I'm not happy that it was this man. If his positions were in line with what I feel God tells us is right, I would be thrilled.

ReplyDeleteI have not been able to stop crying all day. I did not vote for him for the color of his skin, that would never be why I make such an important choice, but the implications? ReplyDeleteThat is so great. My husband and i had about the same conversation last ngiht. I am so happy that my kids will never know the time when they could not be president or that the people were so divided.
ReplyDeleteMari - I'm gonna have to agree with you. I'm for the man that stands with my God and is in line with the Bible. While, I don't think either candidate really did that well, there was a clear candidate who tried. For me, it's never been a race issue, it's a moral issue. Either way, I am committed to moving forward with the rest of the country. What else can you do?

Although I didn't vote for him, I'm really sad that his grandma didn't live long enough to see him win the presidency. How proud she would have been. That has to be so hard for him in this time of victory...almost bittersweet.

ReplyDeleteAnd I'm with you. Only focusing on the positives. Seems the past few weeks when I was checking news headlines every few hours and listening to talk radio I started to have panic attacks. That's just not healthy. For my sake and my family I have put on the rose colored glasses and looking for those silver linings and rainbows.

ReplyDeleteI didn't vote for Obama either for the same reasons Mari has mentioned but I do think we have to do a lot of praying for him. The next four years maybe very interesting.

ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, Megan, I couldn't help but to think of Bean and Peabody on Tuesday night and celebrate for them specifically in the midst of celebrating for our country. What an amazing time in our country.
Such a great time in our history even in the midst of such struggle!!

ReplyDeleteI volunteer at my son's school, which is predominately ethnic, and I was walking a little girl to her classroom. She turned to me with the sweetest smile on her face and said, "We have a black president, Ms. Anna!" I didn't fully realize what that would mean to young black children until I saw the expression of "can you believe it?" on her face.
